Achieving herd immunity to include 17 yrs and below

As has been the trend in other nations, the Task Force against COVID-19 is also eyeing to inoculate the younger population, approximately 29 million Filipinos aged 17 and below, as they form part of the herd immunity and to safely reopen schools for face-to-face instructions.

MANILA — The official word from the task force: Experts are saying we cannot eliminate COVID-19 if the whole population is not vaccinated, because kids are the most mobile. We also can’t reopen schools if we can’t vaccinate students.

Vaccine czar Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr says Government experts are studying vaccine brands that may be administered to the young group.

For a range of ages, emergency use authorization (EUA) has been granted to Pfizer-BioNTech (vector mRNA type) for 12- to 15-year-olds. China has approved CoronaVac (inactivated virus) for use for three- to 17-year-olds. Moderna, also a vector mRNA type of vaccine, is still doing clinical trials for ages 12 to 17. (BG/Headline PH)
