The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) lauded President Rodrigo Duterte for his call to pass the military pension reform in his fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA).

AFP Spokesperson Major General Edgard Arevalo thanked Duterte for “directing the institution of a new retirement and separation benefits system for new AFP recruits and officer candidates.” He added that the move will address concerns about the present pension and retirement pay of the AFP taken from the budget of the Department of National Defense (DND).

In his recent SONA, Duterte said that the issue about the AFP’s pension and retirement pay system should be immediately resolved in order not to create a problem in the years to come.
