The Anti-Red Tape Authority (ARTA) has formed a special task force that will monitor and strictly enforce the compliance of agencies, particularly the local government units (LGUs), to speed up the permitting process for the construction of cell towers.
ARTA Director-General Jeremiah Belgica cited reports gathered by the agency that some LGUs are notorious in imposing burdensome requirements and huge fees at various stages of the permitting process. He added that cases may be filed against government officials or employees who cause delays.
“ARTA and DICT, under program NEHEMIA, has been steadily coordinating and steering the different agencies together to come up with a streamlined framework for securing permits for the construction of telco towers. We need at least 50,000 additional towers for the country in order to be competitive with our ASEAN neighbors,” said Belgica.
