Independent House member and BUHAY Partylist Representative Lito Atienza urged the government to just “concentrate on saving lives” and addressing the coronavirus disease 2019 situation in the country rather than focusing on bringing back death penalty.
Atienza added that the government should let the next administration “worry” about the revival of capital punishment, which President Duterte mentioned during his recent fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA).
He also pointed out that even if the Congress decides to reinstate death penalty, Duterte won’t see judicial executions during the remainder of his term.
“We’re now in the middle of a public health disaster that has already demolished the livelihood and jobs of millions of Filipinos,” the former three-term mayor of Manila stressed.
He added that pushing for death penalty amid COVID -19 is an “exercise in futility.”
