Bato was a ‘last-minute’ pick for president—Duterte

President Rodrigo Duterte said on Friday that Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa was the PDP-Laban Cusi faction’s “last minute” choice as presidential candidate.
He was to be the party’s standard-bearer for the 2022 national elections.

MANILA — “Wala kaming ulo (We didn’t have a standard-bearer). I think PDP [Laban] decided last minute, during the last day of filing of the certificates, that it would be good to have at least a head of the whole team,” said Duterte in an interview with SMNI News in Davao City.

Meanwhile, De la Rosa said that his surprise bid for presidency was merely a “strategy.”

According to him, the party has long considered him to be its official candidate.

Senator Bong Go will be running alongside De la Rosa as vice president.

Leading the faction, Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi, commented De la Rosa was their “secret candidate.”

De la Rosa said earlier that he would be willing to step aside if ever the president’s daughter and Davao City Mayor, Sara Duterte-Carpio, decides to run and is adopted by the party.

In Resolution No. 10717, the Commission on Elections said an aspirant from a duly registered political party or coalition, who dies, withdraws, or is disqualified for any cause after the last day for the filing of COCs, may be substituted by an aspirant belonging to, and nominated by, the same political party or coalition.

No substitute shall be allowed for any independent candidate, it added.

The poll body said a substitute for an aspirant/candidate, who died or was disqualified by final judgment, may file a COC up to mid-day of Election Day. (HMP/Headline PH)
