As of August 2, the Philippines has recorded 103,185 coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infections with a record-high 5,032 new positive cases.
The Department of Health (DOH) reported that there are 35,569 active cases, 65,557 recoveries, and 2,059 deaths.
The said figures indicate a worse situation as compared to the study by the researchers from the University of the Philippines (UP) which projected that the country could surpass 100,000 COVID-19 infections by the end of August.
It can be noted that the Philippines only had a total of 38,511 confirmed cases in the beginning of July, with daily tallies ranging from 290 to 5,000 new infections.
The alarmingly ballooning COVID-19 cases in the country led several health workers and medical associations to urge the government to revert Metro Manila under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) to slow down the continued spread of the virus in the Philippines.
