De la Rosa’s bid: A suspiciously last-minute decision

Senator Ronald ‘Bato’ dela Rosa filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) for president under the Cusi-wing for PDP-Laban on Friday, a last-minute move by the party.
Senator Bong Go will be his running mate.

MANILA — PDP-Laban earlier announced the Go-Duterte tandem, with the Senator as its presidential candidate and the chief executive as its vice president.

Duterte then expressed his intention to retire from politics, which then explains Go filing for his position instead.

When the party decided to search for its standard-bearer, it was as if only one knew about it.

Now campaigning as “Ba-Go 2022,” Bato’s decision to run for president was confirmed by PDP-Laban faction secretary-general Melvin Matibag to reporters. Bato, however, wasn’t so sure as to when the party decided that he will run as president.

All the more were speculations raised as to De la Rosa will just serve as a benchwarmer for someone who will take his place later on.

Members of the PDP-Laban (Emmanuel) Pacquiao even called De la Rosa’s candidacy “a smokescreen” for the president’s daughter to subsequently aim for the presidency.

De la Rosa won as senator in the 2019 elections. Prior to that, he was Duterte’s chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP). (HMP/Headline PH)
