President Rodrigo Duterte berated local government units (LGUs) once again for not immediately addressing red tape in the telecommunications sector that led to insufficient cell tower roll-outs and unsatisfactory Internet connection service in the Philippines.
“It pisses me off to no end really to be discussing these telcos because ang karamihan walang service dito, walang service doon. I said that’s chicken or egg thing. Whether it’s because of the absence of the towers, they are not allowed to build or erected, or itong walang kapasidad itong telcos to invest more,” said Duterte.
The president noted that he plans to discuss the matter with the involved parties “in the coming days.”
Duterte previously ordered LGUs to expedite the processing of permit applications within three days after telcos complained about the overwhelming requirements set by local officials to allow them to install and operate cell towers.
