Following the twin bombings in Jolo, Sulu on August 24 which left at least 15 dead and 75 injured, President Rodrigo Duterte told government troops to fight until terrorists are neutralized. In his speech, Duterte added that the military should “fight hard hanggang magkaubusan na.”
In his visit in Jolo a few days after the explosions, Duterte pointed out that the recent terrorist attacks only strengthen the government’s aim to “crush the lawless elements behind this cowardly act.” He also appealed to the military to “think about peace.”
Authorities said that supporters of the Islamic State have claimed responsibility for the bombings. The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), meanwhile, said that they will utilize the controversial Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020 against those who are behind the attacks.
