Opposition Senator Risa Hontiveros filed Senate Resolution No. 509 which pushes for a legislative investigation to find out Filipino entities, individuals or companies, that collaborated with China in the construction of artificial islands and military facilities in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
The filing of the resolution came after lawmakers urged President Rodrigo Duterte to end the deals with Chinese firms involved in the militarization of the disputed waters.
Duterte himself, however, refused to heed the advice, insisting the country’s need for investments from China.
Noting that soil, sand, and other materials taken from the Philippines were used by the Beijing government in their reclamation projects in the WPS, Hontiveros said that it would have been impossible without the help of entities within the country. “Who are these traitors? This should be investigated immediately, and anyone found to have colluded with foreign powers to militarize the WPS should be penalized,” she added.
