Senator Panfilo Lacson urged the national government under President Rodrigo Duterte to issue a stern warning against local government unit (LGU) executives who extort money from telecommunications companies (telcos) in exchange for permits and licenses.

Lacson added that Duterte’s threat should also cover those officials who offer “protection” to telcos in exchange for money in areas where armed groups like the CPP-NPA are present.

On the other hand, Lacson said telcos should treat the president’s pronouncement in his fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) as a wake-up call to improve their services to the public. The senator noted that the country’s telecommunications services pale in comparison with other countries in Southeast Asia in terms of speed and efficiency.
