Metro Manila to have less curfew hours, lower alert level

The continuous drop of COVID-19 cases in the National Capital Region (NCR) makes it ready to transition to a lower alert level and to shorter curfew hours.

MANILA — According to the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Metro Manila is now ready to drop from Alert Level 4 to Alert Level 3 due to the decline of coronavirus cases. The Alert Level 4 status will be retained until Friday, 15 October 2021.

“I think we’re already ready to bring the alert level down to 3, we’re just awaiting the formal announcement of the Department of Health regarding the alert level drop,” said Interior Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya.

Curfew hours will relax at Alert Level 3. The 10 P.M. to 4 A.M. curfew will be shortened to 12 M.N. to 4 A.M., according to Parañaque City Mayor and Metro Manila Council (MMC) chairman Edwin Olivarez.

A meeting on Thursday, 14 October, with the pandemic task force will however determine or affect the alert level update, according to Olivarez.

“The alert level will be based on data regarding the reproduction number and health care utilization. Right now, the MMC has no recommendation [yet] but all local government units (LGUs) are ready to implement any alert level classification provided by the IATF,” Olivarez stated.

OCTA Research, a key provider of data related to COVID-19 cases in the Philippines, stated that the current reproduction number (R0, pronounced R-naught) in Metro Manila has dropped from 0.83 to 0.61 during 25 September to 01 October. An R0 of 1 means that for every one virus carrier, there is a transmission of the virus to another person. In turn, R0 shows the infectiousness of a disease. An R0 getting lesser than 1 is an indicator that the virus is on a decline.

According to OCTA, the cases in Metro Manila in the past week have declined by over 1,000—from 3,627 down to 2,140. The positivity rate has also declined by 13 percent within this span of time. (RF/Headline PH)
