In his weekly televised address, President Rodrigo Duterte called Vice President Leni Robredo “dishonest” and “incapable of truth” for supposedly claiming he was missing in action during the onslaught of Typhoon Ulysses.
Duterte claimed Robredo had done nothing to help in typhoon response efforts. He warned her not to “compete” with him, saying: “Kaya ako lumipad sa Bicol, inunahan mo pa ako pakunwari. But do not compete with me and do not start a quarrel with me kasi ikaw wala ka talagang ginawa except ‘yung mga tawag-tawag.”
Reacting to the president’s meltdown, Robredo on Twitter said: “I just called out Sec. Panelo for peddling fake news. I am also calling out whoever peddled the fake news to the President, kaya ganito siya ka pikon. I never said ‘Where is the President’? You can review all my tweets.”
“Marami sainyo tumutulong sumagot sa mga umiiyak at humihingi ng tulong para ma rescue sa Cagayan at Isabela noong gabi ng Nov 13 hanggang sa madaling araw ng Nov 14. I did what I felt was my job,” the vice president continued.
“Sa panahon ng matinding sakuna, dapat lahat na tulong, welcome. Hindi ito contest. Hindi tayo nag uunahan. Lahat tayo dapat nagtutulong tulong para sa ating mga kababayan,” she added.
As Duterte’s speech spread over the internet and reported by media late Tuesday night, netizens, using the hashtags #DuterteMeltdown and #NasiraanAngPangulo, called out Duterte for his sexist remarks and false claims against Robredo.
Many claimed that the president is just insecure with the praise his vice president gets for her efforts to help those affected by the onslaught of recent typhoons.
