President Rodrigo Duterte didn’t mention the state of war-torn Marawi City during his fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) because its rehabilitation is already ongoing, the Palace explained.

The statement came after Basilan Representative Mujiv Hataman expressed dismay over Duterte’s lack of mention about Marawi, adding that he should have set a deadline for the reconstruction of city especially since he’s the first president from Mindanao.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said the government continues in implementing its rehabilitation efforts for Marawi. A five-month-long conflict between the government and the Islamic State-linked Maute group in 2017 destroyed the city and displaced around 40,000 families.
