Senator Grace Poe rejected the bill which seeks to impose 12% value-added tax (VAT) on digital transactions, questioning why the government is pushing for such measure at a time when the use of online platforms is encouraged amid the COVID-19 crisis.

The proposed measure covers apps like Netflix, Spotify, Shopee, and Lazada, as well as online advertisements, mobile app purchases, and e-learning courses. Poe said that it will be a disadvantage to micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises and startups, making it against the provisions of the Bayanihan to Recover as One bill or the ‘Bayanihan 2.’
