Solicitor General (SolGen) Jose Calida emerges as the second-highest-paid official among Cabinet members, and government-owned and controlled corporations (GOCC) officials, according to the latest salary and allowance report of the Commission on Audit (COA). The agency’s report shows that Calida earned a total of P16,952,843.27 in 2019.
Calida has been an instrumental figure behind ABS-CBN’s broadcast stoppage. In February, he filed a quo warranto petition before the Supreme Court (SC), seeking to revoke the media giant’s franchise. In May, Calida’s warning forced the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to issue a cease and desist order (CDO) against the network.
This month, the SolGen praised the House of Representatives for its decision to junk ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal bid. “Justice has been served,” he said, adding that the hearings were “fair, impartial, comprehensive, and thorough.” Calida is now being consulted by SAGIP Party-List Representative Rodante Marcoleta on legal strategies to halt the operations of SKYcable, a subsidiary of ABS-CBN.
