Ang Probinsyano Party-list Representative Ronnie Ong urged the government to provide incentives to Filipinos who use bicycles to work as these are becoming a more popular means of transportation amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Providing incentives for people who bike to work is a small price to pay for its immeasurable benefits,” said Ong, explaining that doing so can encourage more people to use and keep using bicycles even after the pandemic is over.

The congressman cited the incentives given by the Netherlands and the United Kingdom (UK) to citizens who use bikes instead of cars heading to work. Ong said that the proposed legislation which calls for protected bicycle lanes must also include tax perks, extra pay credits, or food vouchers for working cyclists.

“Of course these are rich countries, so we could instead provide incentives in the form of food vouchers which can only be used to buy food commodities,” he added.
