ASEAN member-states have praised Vietnam’s preparations for the ASEAN Summit at the ASEAN Joint Consultative Meeting (JCM) as well as its initiatives and proposals in constructing a vision for ASEAN in 2025 and beyond.
Vietnamese deputy minister of foreign affairs Nguyễn Quốc Dũng told Vietnam News of the meeting that Vietnam has planned progressive steps and targets that could be achieved by all member-states.
“We offered possible initiatives, proposals, and targets for promoting ASEAN community among member countries. Participants at the meeting also supported and appreciated the leading role of Vietnam in the ASEAN chairmanship year,” Nguyễn divulged.
“Our ideas and theme for ASEAN earned support from member countries. The meeting today also focused on the assessment of implementation progress of the Master Plan for ASEAN development, and mid-term evaluation of the Asean Charter after 12 years,” he added.
Among the other initiatives and efforts, the theme offered by Vietnam as ASEAN Chair for the upcoming ASEAN Chairmanship 2020 was “Cohesive and Responsive”, in which assistant secretary and director general of ASEAN-Philippines national secretariat Junever Mahilum commended.
Deputy minister of Lao Foreign Affairs Thongphane Savanphet also commended Vietnam’s initiatives as very helpful in building the ASEAN community in 2025 and beyond in building a foundation for the future development of ASEAN. Furthermore, he said that participants also discussed the Mekong Dialogue at senior officials’ meetings.
As for Indonesian foreign affair ministry Ade Padmo Sarwono, he pledged support for Vietnam’s initiatives and tentative projects for the ASEAN Summit, stating that Vietnam’s priorities and efforts were very important in constructing the ASEAN community with capability, stability, peace, and consolidation, as well as helpful in time among ASEAN that are dealing with COVID-19.
“Vietnam has been doing well in the prevention of COVID-19. You made us safe during the meeting in the beautiful Đà Nẵng City.”
The ASEAN Joint Consultative Meeting was the third and final activity after the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting and the 9th Meeting of the ASEAN Co-coordinating Council Working Group Meeting (ACCWG), in which being part of crucial preparations for the upcoming 36th ASEAN Summit to be held at Ariyana International Convention Centre in Đà Nẵng from April 8 to 9.
